The Plein Rein Painters of Juneau

Cristine Crooks

OK – it’s a cute name that describes the outdoor painting conditions in Juneau most of the time. But with blue skies and low 70’s the week I was in Juneau I’d like to advocate for a name change to the Plein Soleil Painters. Thanks to Cristine Crooks great organizational skills, a group that always meets every Saturday changed their painting date to accommodate me.

I had a fantastic time painting with 8 of the Plein Rein Painters south of Juneau on Sandy Beach. In fact, the view was fantastic in both directions! Painters have a lot of activities to enrich their lives here. Jim Heumann met us there after spending some time rowing – one of his newer passions and as Teri Robus finished her painting, she was headed out for a hike.

I was amazed at the dedication of this painting group – Carole Baker took the ferry from Gustavus, the entry point for visitors to Glacier Bay National Park. Steve Winker shared with me that he has been working with what he calls “digital oils”. He’s thrilled that he’s begun to sell his work. He’s also a great photographer and you can take a look at some of his photos in the Juneau Views.

Architect, Pua Maunu arrived after a busy morning, as did Patti Harper and her visiting mother, Louise Harper.

I had so much fun getting to know these painters that I was one of the last ones to complete my field study. As a result of the Plein Rein hospitality, I’ve had a great introduction to Juneau and, based on their recommendations, some more delightful places to paint while here in Juneau.

Thank you.
