Mules and hikers headed down—some very excited and some fearful of how far they would go— while weary hikers returned from the Phantom Ranch nestled at the Colorado River. It was fun overhearing all the conversations as people climbed the last few yards right below me. A disappointed hiker stopped to chat for a while since he wasn't able to get into the Ranch—he was next up on the waiting list but couldn't wait the extra day.
